Ti Manno is one of my all times favorites. I followed him from DP express, to Gemini all stars and beyond. I have to say however that my vote goes to Coupe Cloue. Le Roi was clever, raw, basic, and true to the depths of Haitian musical folklore. Ti Manno's energy was just what the doctor ordered when I was a young boy in Haiti, but Coupe's Konpa Mamba is the gold standard.
Moi, je continue a ecouter Gracia Delva, Nicky, Cave, Septen, Tropicana, Krezi Mizik, Djakout, Coupe, System, troubadour, racine, Levangil, Vodoo, Ti Manno, Altierry Dorival, Ti Vice...Larose etc..... Ti Manno, Le plus grand ? Je garde la neutralite!
Just a pointer! I suggest all parties in this forum take some time and read the response written by "BRIDELISO". Yes ti manno was an "all time", greatest artist we ever had. Sad to hear that his musics were underappreciated at the time by our people. I was only 11 or 12yrs old and can still remember most of the neighborhood rushing to my house in excitment when his musics were being played on the radio . His messages were not just about political injustice, they were against all human form of violations. I, to this day view T-manno as the "Martin Luther King" of his time through his musics. His musics can still be heard in my home, at every friend & family events. My children do not speak creole that well but they can tell you what Ti Manno's musics were all about. Ignorance is bliss!!!!!!
Manno was an untainted essence of what a true haitian singer should have been then, a devoted soul with his entourage, a champion in the humanitarian cause, and a believer in basics human decency which he expressed well throughout his music.
Today most modern haitian singers and musicians are rarely capable of identify themselves with any valuable musics because they are simply a copy version of each other. The idea of sequencing musics from electronic keyboards is a disaster for the musicians. Everything, the beats from most band are sound similar.
Well, I suppose the question asked here is: "Is Ti Manno the greatest MALE singer of all time?", because I haven't seen much written about female singers. So I'll answer accordingly (forgive my not-so-great English).
Ti Manno had an interesting tone colour, he had a tight vibrato, his pitch was pleasantly high and (almost) always tight.
He also was the first to use his music for vehement activism. Guy Durosier had had a few songs like "Nous", and he had praised the "race" in various occasions, most notably in his - unfortunate for his image - adherences to the then-ruling dynasty. But Ti Manno was precisely committed to causes, in most of his albums. It was rather unusual at the time to be so obstinate. He wrote texts with great courage, was committed and he let it be known, to the point that some of his texts are downright tumid, overblown, gauche, clumsy...
What can one say about that awful "bridge" in "Min culture pa nou" ("Au début, nèg l'afrik, cé nwa yo té yé; bla bla...").
And I would have avoided a song title like : "Sõti lan toilet là"...
For sure he's a great singer, but I certainly don't think he's the greatest Haitian singer of all time. Most Haitian singers, of each period of Haitian music history, are notable, and for different reasons.
Ti Manno was from a tradition of muscled, electrified mini-jazz compas from the very explosive seventies (Volo-Volo, DP...). The "calé cymbale" had just been established as a necessary parameter (it's loud), the drums was not an accessory perc instrument anymore (the 4/4 kick took its place for good), you have amps shouting the sound of guitars and bass (loud !), and for compas to be closer to (loud) rock and funk was just a sign of the times.
Basically, compas had become loud, not unpleasantly loud, but louder than, say, an Ibo Combo ballad. Thus, Ti Manno's singing style was loud itself, energetic, not so refined, just like Isnard Douby's and Shoubou's.
I don't think one can compare this style to that of people like Cubano, his emulators Hervé Bleus and that very bad lead singer from the so-so "Skah-Shah #1 plus d'Haïti" project, of Jean-Claude Dorsainville, Fritz Coq, Zouzoule or Pantal of course, etc. Those singers seem more inspired by the urban crooners of olden times than by the energetic provincial folklore singers, and they sang with more "retenue" (overall), even if the energy of the music had increased over the years.
There are also Haitian singers who were not specifically compas singers. I would not take it upon myself to put compas singers in the same basket as Joe Jack, Ansy Derose, Roger Colas, Gérard Dupervil, etc.
Ti Manno is definitely the most relevant compas singer of the eighties. I believe so because of his tremendous energy, for which he ties Shoubou, but also because of his activism.
yes he is , even if i was a litle boy in that time but i used to listen to his songs. what i always said if haiti was an english or spanish spoken country the world would know him. but i,m proud the compas specially timanno
Ti Manno is no doubt of our greatest of all time but i wouldnt be so quick as to call him the greatest singer of all time. There this one guy, by the name Coupe KLoue is definitely the best haitian singer of all time. The reason i say this is because his music is timeless. You barely hear ti mano anymore unless ur mom and dad own some old records. The youth today still listens to coupe. He is a genius with words, the way he twist them around to convey meanin, not once did he ever curse in any of his songs. He was funny, smart, and charismatic. I love ti manno and all, but if you go around and take a pole and ask people whos better, no doubt they will tell you coupe!
Timanno is best haitian singer of all time, no other haitian singer come close to him. he's still the most respected haitian artist in martinique, guadeloupe, and beyond the french caribbean
timanno is one of the best at all time Iam one of the best haitian musucian I listening to him all time .He of the star made from having that god engel .
Anybody with good sense should know that the answer to this question is one million times YES! Ti Manno: Just picture club violette in 1979, Casino International... I remember when people were throwing money in sealed envelopes at him at a performance in Gonaives, trying to recognize his value by introducing a type of American Idol (Haitian Idol we should say) right in the middle of the performance, something that was done for the first time, to my knowledge. My friend Daniel went on stage and sang "Korige" beautifully. At last, lets not forget Paulema Hotel where he played his last "kermesse" in Haiti for his fans. I WAS THERE LIVE!!!!!!!! We the real fans can never forget that incredible performance where he seemed sad or worried for some reason.
Ti manno was really a very good singer, composer and musician but he is not the greatest of all time; maybe top 5.We have singer such as Gerard Duperville,Roger Colas.Ansy Derose whose voices were much powerfull and even today their work are still very powerfull to listen to.Ti manno came out when there was not too many other that could challenge him and the haitian music was slowly dying; he put some life back to our music and he should be commanded for that because instead of listening to Grammax and the other zouk bands that was slowly engulfing our music we could listen to D P Express and Scorpio.
I am not sure what kind of cool-ade " The Monkey" was drinking. Obviously, he knows nothing about Haitian music. There is no Haitian artists like Timanno period, he was the best and her will remain so for time to come. Can you think of another Haitian artist who remotely comes close to Timanno...
THE SAME WAY THAT THERE WILL NEVER ANOTHER PELE, ANOTHER JORDAN; MICHAEL JORDAN; IT WILL NEVER BE A ANOTHER TIMANNO.... HE'S THE GREATEST; HE HAS INFLUENCED COMPAS MORE THAN ANY ONE....MIZIK LI SE MONIMAN.....
Without a doubt, YES Ti Manno is the single greatest Haitian artist of all time to date and if I may add he is among the greatest ARTISTS of all time in any genre of music. It will be a very long time until a close second come along.
There is no question that Timanno is greatest of all time. The man was a genius, his music and lyric were the best. Currently no single haitian artist can ever be compared with him, once i heard someone try to compare Ti joe from konpa kreyol ( now kreyol la) with timanno. this was an absolute joke to me, ti joe cannot even singer nor can he write like timanno. I like to compliment you guys from heritagekonpa on this article on timanno. this was best and most informative article i've read on timanno.
