I beleive there are quite a few women in Konpa. Perhaps not filling musician roles, but when they get on stage they rock the mic. Most Female Haitian musicians I know showcase their talent in church. But I had the pleasure to listen to a band that played versatile caribbean music in Manhattan (they're mixed but most are Haitian members). When it came time for them to perform konpa music one of the ladies (there were two, one was Haitian/ the other Latino) blew up the place. She was amazing. You should check them out. She'll take you back to Carol Derisme, to Emeline Michel, to Mariah Carey, to Alicia Keys. All with class, confidence and great talent displayed by the entire band. I kept their business card. They're called Cgroove. See her and tell me what you think.
This never came to my attention until it was pointed out to me---there are no women in Konpa! I'm not talking about the random singers that are affilated with Zin or Phantom.......I'm talking about women collaborating together to create their own band. The only woman band I can remember is Riske....and that's where my recollection of women creating Konpa music ends. Emeline Michel does Konpa, however she's in a class of her own. Her music is very distinct. It combines our national music with the smooth sounds of Jazz and catchy rhythms that only African music can deliver. I thought Zouk had died and lost its originality after Kassav, but my faith was some what restored after hearing some of the new voices of Zouk (i.e Leila Chicot, Sonia Dersion, Mamina).........I wish I could say the same for Konpa.
