Piracy is no longer a foreign issue in the Haitian music industry. It is believed that piracy accounts now
for almost 50% of the Haitian music market. Bootlegs CD and videos are being sold everywhere in the streets in Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, Miami, Canada, Atlanta, and Haiti (bootlegs are also sold in legitimate boutique stores).
The music industry, which has no official organizations, is extremely vulnerable to piracy. The issue of licensing music and royalty are non-existing in Haitian music. Additionally, there are no existing laws in place to protect artists.
Haitian artists often see piracy as a form of promotion as producers and label owners have rarely expressed serious interests in spending money to promote an artist.
The Haitian music market is very small to begin, artist often struggle to sale 10,000 units of an album (CD). We often hear Haitians artists complaining about the treatment they receive from producers, fans, and label owners. Yet, they make no attempt to organize themselves.
Two days ago, we spoke to a number of musicians and label owners, when asked, why Haitian artists and label owners do not have an association in place to secure their rights. We were simply told that Haitians do not believe in unity.
Although there might be some elements of truth associated with this statement , but Haitian artists, promoters, producers, and label owners must come together to combat the piracy issue in Haitian music. Otherwise, they all stand to loose on this issue.
We were recently contacted by two perceptive investors from Florida, who wish to contribute the time and money to have a press conference to discuss the issue. In 1997 some of us here now memeber of Heritagekonpa Magazine attempted to organize a Haitian-American Disc Jockey Association ( HADJA), unfortunately the idea was not welcome by too many people, inluding some musicians and DJs. This time we hope to have the industry support and cooperation. If you're interested, please e-mail your information to heritagekonpa@yahoo.com, or call 917-853-3746 (Ask for RENE).
Haitian artists, promoters, producer, music fans, and label owners are urged to take action against piracy.
